Whilst us Gu girls are busy reviewing food & experiences at cafes in Canggu – diving head first into buttery croissants and dreamy, cheesy cheesecakes – it’s not often we take note of the settings.
And so we’ve collaborated with Sheila from Bali Interiors to prepare a list of the most lust-worthy, #goals-worthy interiors in Canggu.
This month? Cafes. Next month? Villas. After that? Stay tuned Canggu interior junkies.
Cafes in Canggu
The list of cafes in Canggu keeps growing by the day. Popping up like mushrooms in the rainy season, it’s near impossible to keep track of all the new ones. But as hard as it is to narrow it down to five, it’s time to reveal those cafes I deem to display the most beautiful interiors and very distinctive personalities that I crave. Each one of them is so unique that it cannot be missed if you come and visit this little magical corner of the world.
The Shady Shack
Probably my all time favourite. When Shady Shack first opened, I wanted to keep it a secret, but it’s simply too good not to share. And who am I kidding? The word got out quick!
The Shady Shack is my dream beach home morphed into a café. One part of it is a big white wooden house where the actual kitchen and café is. Outside there is a large garden eating area. That’s where its beauty is truly found, in those different outside spaces, from old wooden tables made out of old doors, to big day beds, to little stools and vintage small tables, all somehow imperfectly matching together. If I had to describe the look, it would be Tulum-bohemian. The open spaces and little corners are all individually decorated, there a tropical feeling, here a relaxed atmosphere, and of course, incredible food.
It really is what Canggu is all about. If you want to come and see where the yogis, the vegans and cool expats hang, without any pretention, then The Shady Shack is where it’s at.
Bungalow Living Cafe
The first time I went to Bungalow Living Café was nearly two years ago, and my love affair began instantaneously.
Bungalow is the kind of place where you can go on your own or with your best mate. Where you want to sip cups of tea and talk for hours. Or where you want to find solitude and read that book or write that poetry.
Bungalow Café is simply inspiring. There is so much thought and detail in this place, nothing is here by chance. The beautiful tables and chairs, the decorations, the books, the trinkets, the flower displays, the colourful and empty bird cages on the tree, everything meshes cleanly. The ceiling detail in the main café part and the new showroom area correlate and make you dream of Udaipur and Marrakesh.
With so much to see both inside and out, it’s the place to go for “me” time and spoil yourself with delicious food.
Milk & Madu
Milk and Madu has become such a staple of Canggu. Everyone knows Milk & Madu.
It’s my chosen place to impress guests as the food is always incredible. Insider tip – try the pancakes! The toy selection and the big grassy area make it ideal to take the little ones too. It is also brilliant if you have a lot of people as there are plenty of spaces to accommodate larger groups. And if you want to get some work done, Milk and Madu has you covered, with hidden power points under the tables and the sofa benches. The large shared table in the centre allows for new Cangguian friendships to be made. Big LOVE!
Bottega Italiana Rosemarina
If you want proper Italian coffee, then stop looking and head to Bottega Italiana ASAP.
The selection of breakfast options is small and oh-so-European. The coffee is to die for. Bottega Italiana is by no means a large space. In Argentina we say “La casa es chica, pero el corazon es grande” which translate as “the house is small, but the heart is big”. And the heart is certainly big in Rosemarina.
Everything is home made, including the bread, the croissants, the tables, the shelving and the seats. The interior is cool but classic, bringing a touch of Milan to Canggu.
Like coffee and want to hang out with the cool kids from Canggu? CRATE Cafe is where its’ at.
CRATE café is so cool that we need a new word for cool. The place looks like a deconstructed artwork, only artist and fashion people can fully appreciate it. CRATE has the industrial look to a T. It has bare walls, unfinished construction, cool murals and lots of concrete. The loud music and hipsters, surfers and really really good looking people, will have you mistaking it for a warehouse party instead of a café.
The coffee is also excellent, so if you need a pick-me-up double-shot of your favourite drug to cure that hangover, park your ride out front, put your sunnies on and take a seat.
