We’ve done the research, we’ve tasted them all. There’s not a lava cake we are yet to crack, a doughnut we haven’t demolished, a tart we haven’t tried, nor a pie we haven’t put away. It’s been one sweet journey around the Gu, and so we give to you..

Chocolate Molten Lava Cake @ One Eyed Jack

Jl Pantai Berawa No. C89, Berawa, Canggu

I’ve eaten a few lava cakes in my time.  If there’s one thing I’ve learned – it’s that if the lava isn’t oozing out of your cake like Krakatoa when that first spoonful goes down, don’t bother. It’s all about that lava. Lava, lava, lava. I could swim in a bath of this gooey goodness. The chefs at One Eyed Jack must keep one eye on the oven at all times, because they’ve timed this bad boy in perfectly. The cake is moist with a sinfully rich dark chocolate cocoa flavour. Just the right amount of cake, and just the right amount of ooze. Impressed is an understatement – obsessed is more like it. Dusted with matcha and served with refreshing matcha ice cream. OOF.

 

Dulce De Leche Lava Cake @ La Finca Bali

Jl. Subak Sari No. 77, Berawa, Canggu

Ok, ok, two lava cakes.. i know. But trust me on this. Maybe it’s because I spent most of my childhood sneaking swigs of condensed milk out of open cans in the fridge, maybe it really is just a THING i have for Lava.. either way.. you can thank me later. Canggu’s favourite Spanish restaurant fresh-bake the most decadent, delicious, dulce de leche lava cake – which is right up the top of our list, with good reason. Oozy dulce de leche sauce spill out of the caramel cake for spoonfulls of buttery-sweet, melt in your mouth goodness – perfection, everytime. I dare you to try NOT to lick that plate clean. Accompanied with banana salted caramel ice cream. STOP. IT. (don’t stop it!)

 

Banoffee Pie @ Ulekan Bali

Jl Tegel Sari No. 34, Berawa, Canggu

A Balinese twist on the much loved Banoffee pie. Forget normal dairy cream. How about fluffy coconut cream that tastes like a tropical marshmallow? Keep digging.. next comes a layer of fresh banana slices, thick gooey salted caramel fudge and last but certainly not least, a crumbly cinnamon spice biscuit base. This dessert is a total mouthgasm with every spoonful. The kind of spoonful that causes your eyes to involuntarily roll to the back of your head. Ya feel me? 10/10 would Banoffee again.

 

Pavlova @ Watercress Bali

The list wouldn’t be complete without an ode to my homeland of Australia. Cut me a slice of that pav would ya love? This down-under delicacy is as much a fruit salad as it is a pavlova. Crispy crunchy meringue crust with a soft, light (perfectly executed, nana-would-be-proud) interior. Dished up with a vanilla cream topping and fresh tropical fruits like mango, strawberries, passionfruit, grapes and kiwifruit. You beaut’.

 

Sweet Bento Box @ Ji Restaurant Bali

Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Batu Bolong, Canggu

I’m a huge sucker for novelty. So you can imagine my reaction when the cutest, kitschiest little golden bento box was put in front of me. Removing the lid, I found six very carefully crafted beautiful mini desserts. Fifty photos later –  I finally dig in. Not usually a fan of mochi on it’s own, I was pleased that these little balls also contained ice cream inside a small white chocolate sphere in the middle. Chewiness followed by a delicious burst of cold ice cream and choc. Pleasing. Next comes ‘chocolate nemesis’ – two squares of moist chocolate cake covered with chocolate. Nemesis or not, chocolate always wins my heart. Finally, a unique little number – the Jackfruit spring roll. Crisp spring roll pastry with jackfruit and a zesty plum sauce inside. Absolutely finger lickin’ good. The Sweet Bento box contents are constantly changing to keep things interesting, which means you’ll just have to keep coming back for more, right?

 

Ice-cream Sandwiches @ Creamery Bali

Small batch churned nitrogen ice cream sandwiched between two big cookies that taste just like your mum made ‘em. Local ingredients bringing you the most decadent dessert flavours in ice-cream form. Think red velvet cheesecake, fudge brownie, choc chip, cookie dough, dulce de leche – the list goes on. Aptly named the ‘ice cream laboratory’ – they sure do make some mind warping concoctions. A cloud of smoke here, some mixing there and voila!! Fresh, indulgent and preservative-free treats made right before your eyes. You can’t go past the textural bliss of crunchy cookie meets gooey ice cream. Deep down we’re all just big kids, right? Get nostalgic and cool off with an ice cream sanga, pronto! 

 

Smoked Crème Brûlée @ Goodwood Smokehouse & Grill

Jl. Pemelisan Agung no. 21, Canggu

Just when you thought that the classic creme brûlée couldn’t possibly get any better, Canggu’s newest smokehouse go and level-it-up. Yep. Smoked creme brûlée is now a thing. Baked in a skillet and smoked on the grill for an out-of-this world smoky flavour, this bad boy put’s mums attempts to shame (sorry mum). Crack the burnt sugar topping, but phones out first! You’ll want to capture that sound. Cooked to a custardy perfection, the pudding is thick with a mild vanilla bourbon flavour, topped with just enough caramelised sugar and a single strawberry. Delightful from beginning to end.

 

Churros fried ice cream @ Tropicana Cafe

As a Spaniard, my Abuela’s (Grandma’s) churros were a part of the food pyramid in our family. I consider myself a connoisseur of these crispy, doughy, cinnamon sugar dusted sticks of gold. I had never found any other version of this dessert quite to my satisfaction, when out of nowhere this bad boy came along. Picture this: a vanilla ice-cream core, coated in a warm, crusty churros shell. Dusted with cinnamon sugar and covered in melted chocolate with biscuit bits and cream. Mind. Blown. Also possibly the top button of my pants. My hat goes off to you Tropicana café – you’ve outdone yourselves. Don’t tell Abuela.

 

Chocolate Fondue @ Be Chocolat by Michel Clement

Jalan Subak Sari, Berawa, Canggu

The second I walked into Be Chocolat, my nostrils filled with the most delicious smells of cocoa. It was intoxicating.  The Be Chocolat chocolatiers have chocolate making down to a fine art. Start yourself off with some free samples (obviously), ranging from 60-85% cocoa and origins from all over the world. Though this boutique of YUM is famous for its handmade chocolate e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g – from salt-crusted wedges, to choc-dipped oranges, to raisin clusters.. don’t leave this chocolate factory without getting to know their lesser-known dine-in menu (you’re welcome Canggu). Although yes, the smoothies and choc mousse are DEFINITELY worth writing home about, today we talk fondue. Skewer yourself some fresh banana and strawberries, and dip them into the gooey, melty pots of belgian chocolate. We’ve died and gone to chocolate heaven.

 

Cream puffs @ Poule De Luxe

Jl. Batu Belig 16D, Batu Belig, Canggu

Having a rough day? These pretty little artisan cream puffs have got choux. No really, crunchy crispy French choux pastry with assorted flavours of custard inside. Chocolate, salted caramel, coffee, praline, lemon curd, raspberry – the list goes on. With twelve flavours in total it would be rude not to try a few. Besides, what hope do you have of eating just one when they get cheaper the more you buy? Pair with a cup of coffee and some girlfriends for instant enjoyment. The pistachio took my fancy with its sweet salty combo. FYI, their different coloured almond paste toppers make them extremely Instagram-able.


From Batu Belig to Batu Bolong – the Gu has become a mecca of all things naughty and delicious. So if you’re feeling like you want to treat yourself, now you can do it right. NB: tick off one of these bad boys at a time so as not to make oneself sick. Take it from me (#worthit) Now excuse me while I go on a juice detox…
