Batu Bolong needs no introduction; the famed epicentre of our Canggu hood. What it may need however, is a re-introduction after such swift gentrification of what was once a mere walkway connecting Old Mans to Deus. A street address belonging to a few Canggu asli’s, Betelnut and Crate V1.0.. the Merryck’s, the Cross’s and the Sassi’s moved in and faster than we could say “GU!” Batu Bolong was bordering on unrecognisable. Now Canggu’s official eat street, Jl Batu Bolong is home to the hood’s most coveted culinary destinations. The newest arrival to add to your to-GU list is Ninety One Bali; a one-time villa repurposed into a poolside dining room, combining the comforts of lounging with the elegance of eating out.

Of the same calibre as its Fishbone Local, Mason, and Billy Ho neighbours, NinetyOne is the first in the postcode to offer a spot for a midday swim. They say the best kind of pool is your neighbours pool, and with vibes this good – sometimes tells us that their doorbell is going to be buzzing with welcome baskets.

Guests from all walks are ushered in off the chaotic Batu Bolong strip, into an Oasis of tropical breezes, elevated eats and some of the most chill cocktails we’ve had in a hot minute. The vibe is homey, and by home we mean living our best life in a mega mansion with butler service and personal chef. Don’t mind me.

The menu is Middle Eastern and mingley; share style dishes designed to be enjoyed with friends over a refreshing cocktail or a glass or two of wine. Fresh and inventive, the meals are ingredients driven – think charred octopus with chorizo & chimichurri, crispy skin salmon with blistered tomatoes & thyme, lamb tandir & pistachio or pan fried barramundi with baba ganoush. Start the night with a few small plates of grilled halloumi & peach saganaki, marinated olives, and the house hummus with flatbread, and wet your whistle with a sneaky few bevvies in the bar out front.

The drinks list was devised by house mixologist Anya Montague, who takes her cocktail artistry as seriously as we take our cocktail drinking. With bold flavours and an almost holistic approach to mixology, Anya’s creations reach almost (almost) superfood status, laced with anti-inflammatory properties like turmeric, or antioxidant rich pomegranate. Drinking to good health? Sounds like our kinda regime.

If you’ve got plans this weekend, cancel them – and make yourself right at home at our new fave.
