There are plenty of places in the ‘Gu we’d recommend our friends with expensive taste hang out. But what about our pals with an appetite for opulence on a budget for beer? The Champagne fan with a Bintang plan? Well, thaaahank baby cheeses for Berawa’s newest sophisticated sprout, Ona Eatery Canggu, where a fine dining gal’s dreams can be made and her wallet can be saved (okay last rhyme, I swear).
Ona’s all brickey exterior and blue, cream and orange interior is reminiscent of something you might see on a quaint Grecian island; but once you settle among the happy indoor plants and get a few pillows under your toosh, you’ll be reminded of why you love Bali. The restaurant overlooks rice paddies, strikes a poise between being naturally breezy and regulated by fans (hey, no shame in asking for help) and flaunts a beautiful aqua marine water feature at its centre. There are endless choices for seating from bar tops to booths, lounges to low seats, and high seats to baby seats.
For a venue that looks like it could be in a James Bond flick, the cuisine is completely affordable. The menu offers its own kooky twist on signature brunch plates (shakshuka and eggs benny) cosied up with Indonesian favs and a range of other darling dishes from around Asia – none of which will send you further into your jumpsuit pocket than for 85k. And the brunch cocktails, ooft! Ona’s house made, freshly squeezed, fruit and vege juices with a swig of the good stuff – really, they should be called Health Boozters – are pretty hard to look past even flanked by all the other devourable liquid possibilities.
At nightfall the garden lights come on and the atmosphere shifts from smart-casual brunch to fine dining, but even then, it won’t rob your next-day-allowance. Ona has its own little veggie garden (sahh hip), which the chefs and bartenders harvest from to produce a number of the items that end up on your table, and their main kitchen is open-plan and restaurant-facing, which means you can connect with the faces that feed your faces.
Here is the best bit though: spiralling upwards (the best kind of spiralling) from the shallow crystalline pool we mentioned before is a stairway to a cute little cocktail bar. *Squeal* The room has the scope to create a lively human ambiance but is exclusive enough you could fist bump everyone on your first round.
Ona certainly has its place in Canggu. The venue is unlike anything we’ve seen before and offers an experience that traverses the line between comfort and class. It’s a place to take friends on holiday, mums on Mother’s Day, partners on Date Night, foodies on sabbatical, vegans on high horses and the whole girl-gang when a boozy brunch just can’t be gone without for a single weekend longer. Sunday recovery, book us in.
